Some players have theorized that it may have been a much more broken card during development, so it was nerfed to oblivion to remove any chance of it being remotely abusable

And the flip cards were the coolest part of the design

The glaring difference is that planeswalkers are easier to attack and it is a bit more elementary to enable some chip shots on an opponent and work them towards a lower life total, but once again thats only a piece of the puzzle
