but luckily Paul Matthews from Applewise had propagated the tree thus saving the variety

Kretchmers Surprise Year:1 YR possibly brought over from NormandyA Welsh dual purpose cooking and cider apple. Small to medium green apples with a red flush and streaking and some russet. A sharp tasting apple. Blossoms late May. A heavy cropper, with fruit that stays on the tree well into autumn. Found growing on a farm in Llanfyllin, Powys, belonging to the Kretchmer family.
